Great to see The Lion on the way back.

Booked a table and drank there last week for the first time since 2002! I have avoided it since then due to it going downhill and reading terrible reviews. Great selection of beers on draught (best in all the 6 pubs we went to) and a reasonable menu for a pub that has been transformed in only a few months.I suspect the owners are only at stage 1 of the transformation; the old showers and amusements are shut up currently and I'm sure more will be done to bring customers back as they continue to expand. There isn't even a sign on the main river to entice you in! It hasn't got the homely feel it used to have when I first went in in the late 1990s. The floor is all bare boards and the lighting in the dining room a bit dim. Service was excellent though, with a pint of 'Late Red' £3.40. They have an extensive gin list if that's your thing. They also need to update their website - the details of the previous regime are still up there. We will be back again next year, where I'm sure more improvements will have been made.

Mooring Description :
We moored on the 'paid' side - £4 for the night, which I'm sure is less than I paid 15 years ago. It's free on the other side of the dyke where the windmill is, but there are no mooring rings. If you have a big boat, it might be difficult to get out the next day if boats are moored both sides. There is a small turning point at the end of the dyke, but there is always a bit of a cross wind there.
Food Description :
The meals my family and I ate were perfectly good, if a bit over priced. What I like about the pub is it's not trying to copy what every other tourist pub is doing. There were some different things to try on the menu, with some traditional dishes, such as a Lion Burger or fish and chips. There were other families there and they didn't seemed to mind about the absence of beans and chicken nuggets with everything. However, if that's what some families want, then this isn't the place for them. Not the best meal I had on the Broads all week, but by no means the worst. I would say the dessert was very overpriced at £5.95 - it was advertised as a treacle tart, but they'd gone for the minimalist approach. It also didn't taste of treacle, as there was an overpowering lemon zest to it.

Poor menu

Visited this week, very poor menu, especially for kids. No chicken dishes, prime staple for kids is chicken nuggets and beans, pub does neither. When suggested they should offer this, they only want to offer fresh produce...... All chicken int he area must be the frozen variety then.......

1st visit

Visited September 2013 for the first time. Its a very old style pub with a children's games room and live music on certain nights. Good choice of cask beer but all bigger brands. Would like to see a different local brewers beer on offer. I will return at some time but not top of my pubs to re visit.

part time games arcade!!!!

i visited the lion with my wife and two grandsons back in august 2011 having promised them an evening of arcade games and pool, unfortunately the management decided otherwise. at 8.30 pm the arcades were shut down and pool tables covered over and this in peak holiday time as well. we also ate in the pub and found that the food was prepacked or frozen, so was not impressed!!!

Dog and family friendly

The Lion has a nice public bar area and lots of seating outside, at the front and in the beer garden at the back. It is very dog and family friendly, but they do ask that dog owners with extendable leads, keep them on a short lead whilst in the pub and grounds. (Rightly so I believe)

Mooring Description :
There are plenty moorings in the nearby Thurne Dyke, but be warned it is rather narrow so wide beam boats will need to take special care. My advice would be to travel down the dyke first and turn round in the private basin at its head before mooring up on either the port or starboard side banks

Great for Vegetarians!!

What a revelation this pub is for a veggie! A full page of the menu with at least 8 choices for veggie main meals, the offerings are also a change from the normal vegetarian dishes at most pubs. The place was busy with diners on a mid week evening which is often a good sign. Very nice pint of Adnams too!!

Mooring Description :
Moorings in Thurne dyke as described by others.
Food Description :
Plenty of veggie choices - I was tempted by the suet pudding with mushrooms & onions in a peppered stilton sauce, but decided to try the nut roast (around £8) - packed full of chewy nuts and tasty with an accompanying spicy tomato sauce. My only slight disappointment was the vegetables which came with it - beautifully presented in three little bundles held together with rings of courgette, but it made for a very small portion. Kev went veggie for the night too and had the spinach and mascopone lasagne (also £8) which he thoroughly enjoyed. We will be back to try more from the menu!!

warm welcome, good beer but food was a let down after last years visit, i had a lamb burger the mrs had a steak burger "made from minced steak", both were shop bought frozen burgers, they came on a plain pre cut bun the type you get from asda 12 in a bag and no dressing, just a burger on a bun, could do alot better making their own burgers and useing a better bun from a bakers and not supermarket.

Early closing

Been here twice recently - having read the most of the other reviews I think I've been to a different pub. Indifferent unfriendly service, landlord closed early - 10.30 - and practicaly threw us out. We tried a second time same sort of result so gave up and won't go again until change of owner comes up - shouldn't be long!

Always worth the visit

I have occasionally read/heard criticism... but for me the Lion is still a favourite pub. Sid the manager is a great guy, eccentric, unusual sense of humour, but we really like him! Dogs are always welcome if well behaved and kept on their (short) lead... The facilities for youngsters are good too...
