Wayford Bridge Inn 02/07/2011

Having completed a protracted property sale we promised ourselves a small celebration with two friends at Wayford Bridge. We had not been since late last year so a check on changes by the new owners would also be in order. We booked by phone and confirmed that there would be something for our veggie friends. On arrival everything looked the same except for a slimmer Stuart in charge. There was the normal 'bistro' menu supplemented by starter and main specials on the blackboards. The menu had obviously been reviewed and adjusted, but then again they should be. Starters - all about £5.00 The vegetarians were limited to two starters on the'bistro' menu - tomato and basil soup or baked field mushroom with goats cheese. I had the soup which was excellent, our friend and SWMBO had the baked mushroom and both thought it was great. SWMBO is not adventurous and this represented a daring choice for her. Mains all about £10.00 Again only two veggie items(excluding fish) on the 'bistro' menu a risotto dish and a salad with goats cheese. The special board also had a spinach and red pepper tart which both veggies selected (having had it before) it came with salad and new potoaoes. After considering the cod from the specials board I settled for the 'Norfolk Smokey' consiting of smoked haddock and prawns in a cream sauce accompanied with new potoaoes and vegetables. SWMBO settled on grilled chicken and chips. Our friends thoroughly enjoyed their tarts, my wifes chicken was a bit dry in places, but thin chicken under a grill is asking for a dry meat. My smokey was excellent, however it was noticeable that the vegeable selection was only swede and brocolli, previously there used to be four types in the mix. Puddings all £4.95 A standard list of mainly 'bought in' products served with cream or ice cream and drizzled/decorated by the chef. There was also a home-made Belgian Apple Cake on offer which one friend tried. Another had Lemon cream pie and the two of us settled for cheesecake. Not surprisingly all were eaten. In summary we all eat 3 courses for about £20 per head. The food was good in nice surroundings and we will be there again. (We did have a service problem with the mains but it was sorted out by Stuart who was genuinely embarassed by the event.) I offer no comment on the beer. Our freinds are non-drinkers SWMBO had orange juice and in a rare event for me tried a half of Suffolk cider which was fine.

Rude and uninviting

We arrived around 5pm on the Sunday and were told there was an hours wait on food and given a menu. We queued to order and were told as we had not booked we could not be accommodated. Seeing as the restaurant was under half full and there were limited bookings this was some kind of sham. We could have been told this when inquiring about food initially.

Mooring Description :
Mooring was £8 and we were told parties of over 6 would get all £8 refunded if we ate, and £4 refunded if less that 6 people ate. Moorings were against a field side with loose rocks and some steps to the road.

Totally consistent.

Has very much a hotel/restaurant feel as opposed to a village pub.

Have stayed in the accomodation while winterising the boat. The staff are very friendly and the accomodation was very pleasant. Over the years, we've stayed at several of the better know hotels between Wroxham and Sutton. This has been by far the best.

Mooring Description :
Limited free moorings under the bridge at Wayford. Plenty of charged moorings on the Dilham side.
Food Description :
Some of the best food I've had in years from any restaurant. Good value, considering the quality. You have to recognise, this is a restaurant with a bar attached. It's not a real pub.

Very Upscale

Food looked v. good - but not cheap. Bar is not worth the trip, like a hotel lobby bar. Staff a bit snooty to us saily types covered in duck do-do

Didn't eat, but the menu looked very good, and the food was well presented.
