Good Beer - Friendly Pub

Stopped off on Saturday of BH weekend. Selection of very well kept beers, so good that I drank enough to erase from my memory what they actually were! Staff and customers very friendly, including the glass juggling barmaid. Well worth a visit

We moored at Pyes Mill, a 10 minute walk away, but moorings also available at Loddon Staithe, a 2 minute walk.

Beer Festivals continue...23rd to 27th April 2008

Simon and Karen who have taken over the White Horse are proving popular with us locals. They are keeping the Beer festivals started by Chris (previous owner)around St Georges Day and the Rememberance weekend in November. They are keeping up the previous owners standards and family and dog friendly attitude while adding their own touches. Simon being a local boy is popular with the locals and always game for a laugh while being very professional. We are really pleased - having your local taken over is a very sensitive issue! Simon has been working as manager for the last 6 months so the transition was well handled and almost seamless. The new sofas are a welcome addition.

Mooring Description :
Loddon staithe is a well known and well established mooring.
Food Description :
The bar meals and main meals are very good and mix good pub food with a more interesting mix. They are very accomodating and dont mind when I order an adult size spaghetti bolognaise off the childrens menu! Special Menus for events (Bastille Day, Burns Nights suppers or any other excue)

Good Ale

The landlord is passionate about his beer and it shows. tried the Timothy Taylors Landlord which is not the easiest beer to manage in the cellar, does need some TLC. As a Yorkshireman I am quite finicky about this beer but it was superb. Nice garden at the rear of the pub.

Best steak in two weeks!

Good "Gastro Pub" / restaurant style food.

Mooring Description : Not Reviewed
Food Description :
We enjoyed the meal here, much better than any "and chips" pub. Yes it is catering for the higher end of the market and is much more restaurant than pub in the dining section. But well worth a visit if your after a very good meal out.

Good Beer

This is a pretty pub and as I understand it, a very old bulding. If it could be imagined that Loddon and Chedgrave were a pub, the Kings Head would be the bar and the White Horse the lounge. It has a pleasant comfortable interior with pool table and beer garden to the rear. The latter is well maintained and has a kind of raised decking area at the side of the restaurant. Although it must have been one of the hottest days of the year so far, there were only a few customers in the pub. Shame really, the landlord knows his real ales and is enthusiastic about beer quality. I would judge that there is a lot of care in the cellar, which is nice to see these days. The quality of the guest beer (Youngs) and the Taylor's Landlord were above average and very enjoyable. Beer prices were about average for Broadland pubs. I have to say that I was impressed with the beer quality and the obvious enthusiasm of the landlord. The food was not sampled at this visit. However a glance at the menu did seem to indicate that prices were a little on the higher side. I would therefore expect a corresponding increase in quality were I to dine there. I don't think this pub would appeal so much to those who may seek loud music, kiddies rides and the like. However discerning beer drinkers would, I beleive, enjoy the experience. I would suggest that if planning to dine, expect to pay more and consider other comments which have been made on this forum. In summary, good pub for beer, check the rest for yourself!

Tried another lunch at the White Horse as a belated birthday treat just two of us. The first time I’d seen the restaurant since it’s make over rather nice assuming you like modern art (an armadillo with red peppers on it’s back was above our table!). Good service without anyone hovering. We were the only diners in the restaurant saw only five other people eating in the bar one young couple in the garden despite being a lovely day and only half a dozen other people having drinks. Thought this was unusual because in the old days the pub used to have a good lunchtime trade. No Woodforde’s but does have Taylors Landlord and a nice pint of Broadside. The menu was a bit restricted and the Rack of Lamb which I had heard was good was off. We both went for the pan fried breast of duck unfortunately the sauce which seemed to have a lot of soy sauce in it completely overpowered the taste of the meat, to the point where it might easily have been venison. The desserts were pleasant rather than exceptional. Two main courses, two desserts, two pints of beer but no starters or wine came to just under £50! Have to say that the New Inn at Rockland St Mary’s or any of the Waveney House Hotel, The Swan House or The Bear & Bells in Beccles would be a better bet. Rather a shame but I think that the White horse has fallen into the same trap as the New Inn did a little while back by trying to go too far up market. (Scampi in the Bar was I think £7.95)

The new Management have been in for a few weeks and are serving meals 7 days a week there seem to be 4 real beers on tap including at least one Adnams but no Woodfordes The Flowers IPA was good

Mooring Description : Not Reviewed
Food Description :
Tried the food which is not as good as the previous setup The starters are a little too large for starters but not big enough for a snack meal. The Chef seems to have a great fondness for Onions. In comparison to the Waveney House Hotel Bar the fish and chips were not nearly so good and more expensive.

Although this pub has an excellent reputation please be aware that carol is retiring in Oct 2005 sadly. The new landlords aready live locally so hopefully things look good. They will be taking over at the end of the month
