I had the misfortune to choose to take some visiting family for a meal at The Surlingham Ferry (or should it be Surlyingham?). The food was terrible, with over cooked tough steaks & fish that smelled decidedly off. The landlord treated our complaints as a joke to be enjoyed by his cronies & gave the impression that he's used to adverse comments from passing trade & couldn't care less. I can't believe this was a one off and would welcome other comments

Welcome easrl01.
Catchy little monniker?

I seem to remember another less-than-complimentary review of Surlingham Ferry in this section, but it suddenly disappeared (got moderated), as perhaps they didn't feel it could possibly be true?

So if you suddenly find yourself gone as well - you'll know what's happened.

Tend to get mixed reaction to this one i don't know whether they use different kitchen staff at different times. Only Coldham Hall seems to show constsitancy. New Inn is at the moment very good and whilst not cheap also does some lighter meals in the middle of the day small options about £3 larger ones £6 salad dressing are really nice, weekend roast with all the trimming around £6.50.

Brammerton Woods End seems to have rather slow service and the Beauchamp Arms is reported as being indifferent.

All based on a summary of hirers comments on return.

I find that weird about the Woods End. I've eaten in there a few times and found that it never usually takes more than 20 minutes for the food to arrive (even at busy periods). I don't think for quality food, that's a long time to wait. The thing I tend to find is that the longer you wait for food, the better it is (cooked from fresh etc.).

Unfortunately, we are so primed these days to receive food almost instantly (i.e. fast food) that we're not prepared to wait more than 10 minutes.

A long time ago (in my student days) I cooked (loosely termed) home made pub food. The way it worked was that on a Sunday, a lady came in, cooked absolutely tons of home made food and then froze it. During the week, we then took it out and microwaved it. I guess that's how a lot of pubs bring out this "instant" home made pub grub today.

Sometimes you have to think about how long it actually takes to cook a good meal. I do feel, however, that if something is cooked from absolute fresh, that there should be a note outside the pub/restaurant to point out that as the food is cooked from fresh (rather than ready made) it may take some time.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I was not making any judgements, just reporting what has been said to me. Sometimes a wait does not matter but if you are having a quick break and need to catch the tide it can be annoying.  Might i ask that if you post about Pubs you also add a review to the pubs guide at the bottom of the page so that stays up to date Smile  .

hi easr101
pretty hard accusation, i think a few more details may help.
how many of you were there.was it a week day or weekend, how did the waiting staff react, normally food will be exchanged did you ask.
was it the landlord or a manager,
sorry to grill you but the only way forward on these issues is to have all the facts,
perhaps your guests may care to comment.

roya

now about my bilges.

I was just wondering what the future holds for this pub, I passed it the other day and it is obviousely subsiding very heavily. The moorings are in a very poor state of repair, which is the main reason why I have never stopped there. I know you can move more fenders round, but most of the posts look very iffy as well.

The moorings were in a poor state when we used to frequent the place over 10 years ago. In fact it was the accumulation of damage to our wooden boat that put us off going there when we only moored down the road in Brundell

You mean the other Starboard then...

We were a party of 5 & as I said we ordered steaks & fish, all of which was poor. My real complaint was when I asked the man who served us if I could speak to the manager, I was laughingly passed to 2 other people who didn't take my complaint seriously. They clearly didn't care & probably thought we were passing holiday makers, so not much loss. Why else in such a competitive area would they treat people that way?  I don't make a habit of complaining but didn't enjoy being humiliated in front of friends & family.
