holiday is closing in fast. Can anyone give any tips on the best pike tactics. Is a spinner the best way or dead bait and if so is there any particular spinners or types of dead bait that get better results than others?. Have tried without success in the past .

Hi, sparky3103 ...

Try giving Steve Burgess ( Budgie on here ) a call at Bass-online in Horning - 01692 630971. He's a pike specialist and is very helpful.

Steve.

Static dead bait doesn't usually work until the Pike gets a bit short of food and has to turn scavenger, this usually happens in a few weeks time when the weather gets cold and the prey fish migrate to a safer havens and become largely dormant.

Static deads work anytime of the year as Pike are naturally scavengers feeding on weak, dying or dead fish, when the prey fish move to "safer" waters the Pike will follow them but as the prey fish get more lethargic so do the Pike hence why you would get less takes on lures and it would seem, more success on Dead Baits. Saying that I still catch Pike on Lures in Winter (just not many) and I catch Pike on Deads in Summer if I use them which isn't often because I like Surface lure fishing.
This time of year you will catch with Deads, Lives and lures and if I had to take only 2 lures they would be a rubber shad and  a slow sinking glide lure but Simmos suggestion is not a bad call at all.

You will sit there for days using dead bait at the moment with so much natural prey moving around them, as many have found out this week, wobbled dead bait maybe, static not at the moment.

Njohn, I think where we disagree is that you will possibly catch more fish on lures than you will on deads in Summer but that is because with a lure you are covering a much larger area of water with a lure so have more chance of putting your bait in front of a fish. If you use static deads you are relying on a Pike coming within sniffing distance of that one bait, if you are lure fishing you have much more chance of putting your lure in front of a fish however that does not mean that Pike prefer moving baits. On the contrary with lure fishing you are merely provoking an instinctive strike by the fish to something shiny passing it's nose (in the majority of cases) which explains why many lure takes don't result in a fish being caught. On the other hand with a dead bait you have a fish picking up something that it is going to eat and therefore many more takes result in fish being caught.
The chances of catching a Pike on dead bait is just the same (if not more likey)as catching a Pike on deads in Winter. The chances of catching Pike on Lures in Summer is far greater than the chances of catching Pike on lures in the Winter
The last time we were down (a couple of weeks ago) we fished 2 days for approx 6 hours a day and had probably 30 plus "takes" on surface lures and caught 4 fish, I fished a dead for 15 minutes while having a beer by the boat and had 1 Pike
