I have a 23ft boat that has a seized brass seacock that is refusing to budge. Problem is that my boat is in the water at Acle Dyke so I have a couple of questions. 1. Is there a way of freeing this up whilst in the water and with no risk of cracking or snapping the seacock and subsequently flooding the boat? (Its near the petrol tank so heat isn't really a option and have tried WD40 etc.)2. If I have to get the boat out of the water to sort, where could I go to have the boat lifted out and onto dry storage on temporary basis? if its at a boat repair garage any recommendations? It would be worth giving Boulter Marine at Horning a ring. If they have room on the hard, they could crane her out and you could do the work yourself, or they could put her on the lift and do it for you. Their number is 01692 630498.
I had the same problem on a 38 foot ex hire boat. It couldn't be easily lifted so In the end the solution was to add a new lever type stopcock on top of the existing one. They both had the same thread and because the top of the existing one was slightly above water level there was no problem. Just had to cut a bit of boarding to allow the pipe work to run a bit higher than originally designed.
Lbby did the work and thought the risk of trying to get the old sea cock to work properly whilst the boat was in the water was too great.
A option worth considering and may only work If the seacock was in the open position, I will give Boulter Marine a call and get the boat on the dry then explore options such as this. Thanks for the advice. Paul
Hi Paul What type of boat ie can it be beached on launching ramp? what type of valve is it ? Blakes/ gate valve/lever ball valve/screw down valve/ is it part of engine inlet filter/strainer. A picture would help. To use WD or similar you need to soak for WEEKS build a dam or container around it and flood it with WD and cover/seal to stop evaporation and be patient then rock the handle back and forth until free. Hi John. Its a sports cruiser with a V6 4.3 Volvo-Penta and Stern Drive with not much room in engine bay to work on the seized seacock. I am not that marine mechanically minded and very little experience with boat repairs or recognising parts etc.. I will take and try to upload a image of this seacock as always best to share these issues! I'm going to get this boat out of the water to attempt repair myself firstly and if it becomes too much for me I will get someone more experienced to carry out the repair. will also update this thread either way with the results. I didn't realise it was stuck shut. From my experience the type of valve makes a difference . The lever type can be freed more easily using wd 40 etc, the wheel top ones have a bigger risk of causing a major problem. Our was one of the wheeled type.
I was told it was to do with the way pressure was bought to bear. Don't know if it Is true or not. I.e. Lever Is up/ down , wheel Is sideways and it Is the sideways bit that Is the problem for the hull.
The set up for many of the seacocks on boats consists of a threaded skin fitting which is first installed in the hull and the seacock is then screwed to that from inside the boat. Many of the skin fittings are just secured by one large nut inside the boat and the fitting is bedded on Sikaflex and sometimes glassed over. When unscrewing the old seacock/valve from the skin fitting its important to make sure that the skin fitting does not turn and cause a leak. There are usually two lugs located in the inlet of the skin fitting so that a tool can be placed on them to make sure that the fitting does not turn when the seacock is removed and replaced from inside the boat. Its a job for two people.
