Hi there,

welcome to the forum!

You need a license to use VHF of course - but some do have them. However, they wouldn't use them much for chit chat, I don't think...

I have no knowledge of CB. The wife and I take some of those little 2 way jobbies, just to avoid losing each other! As our hearing goes, it can also be helpful for communication when one is at the helm and the other at the bows with a mooring line ready!

Hi Douglas,  Most use the PMR radios now as they as smaller and self contained yet still give a good working range whilst on board.

I am also a Radio Ham - G4ONF - and I use a BaoFeng UV-5R 136-174/400-480 MHz Dual-Band   cheap but very good indeed.

Easy to program to what ever frequency you require.
Get a duel band whip antenna and off you go.    Most of us use channel 4 on PMR.
On VHF you can get into the Repeater on GB3NB from almost any where on the rivers.

Hi Douglas,
People use a variety of radio schemes to communicate. Marine VHF, CB PMR and Amateur Radio are used. Autumn Mist" is equipped with Marine VHF 446 MHz as well as Amateur VHF/UHF ~using my amateur callsign G1ZAF

Glenn
