Just a quick line or two to say hello. In a couple of weeks time myself, my wife and our two sons are heading down to the Broads for the first time. We've hired a boat from Brundall and are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather plays ball for the week we are down! Just a general question, does anyone have any particular favourite places to moor on the Southern Broads that they would recommend?

Welcome If you have not already, down load a tide table from the bottom of the page for the dates you are coming on the Broads as this is essential also distance tables. The tides have more effect in the south so take care with timing and remember to moor against the tidal flow.Depending on what time you get to set out stay fairly local for the first night It will still be quite quiet especially on weekdays and most mooring places should have spaces if you moor up by 6pm I'm sure others will be along with more tips

Welcome to you and your crew.
Loddon,Beccles,Waveny centre,Oulton Broad and The Surlingham Ferry (a very reasonably priced substantial feed). Rockland St Mary is another nice mooring. You best go and enjoy all.
Kindest Regards

Hi there

One of my favorite spots on the entire broads is surlingham also called bath gate broad. The only snag is it is only about two hundred yards from the brundall boatyards and so if you like it as much as me you will not get much cruising done.

It is one of the smallest broads and is completely surrounded by trees which gives a feeling of isolation even though you are only a few yards from the main river.

I also like lodden a lot but would suggest mooring at the riverbank moorings on the left before the town basin as it can get quite crowded there.

Have fun

It really depends on what you are looking for,  if you need to moor at a pub there is Reedham (care needed and as has been said you must moor into the tide) but if not Hardley Mill (£5 for the night but there is electric there and a lovely place to visit) another big plus it is a pontoon mooring so no worry about the rise and fall of the tide or Hardley Cross.

Take your time and just remember to not tie up as if there was no tomorrow as the tide does drop quite a lot on the Southern Broads.     If you have a book on the broads it should tell you roughly how much the tide drops in most places to give you an idea for your ropes.

As has been said Rockland St Mary would be a good stop for the first night Electric and a pub right close by.    A big plus it is sheltered and although you would be stern mooring there it is quiet and will give you an opportunity to practice stern mooring.     We have all had to learn this way.

Enjoy your holiday,  cannot promise a heat wave but in April you do get some lovely days , just keep a brolly handy to dodge the showers.

Gosh nearly forgot to say a big Welcome.

Finally the BA are updating a lot of the electric posts so not sure if all will be working yet.

Many thanks for the replies guys and the advice. We've done some boating before on the Lancaster Canal but fancied something a little different this time. The Broads certainly look fantastic, and with just over a week to go til our holiday starts we can't wait! Hopefully the weather will play ball, but I'm sure we'll have a relaxing and enjoyable time regardless.

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you and your family will have a great time. You can check the local weather forecast using the link at the top right of any page here. No rain forecast until the 10th.
