Does anyone here know what the NavCom recommendation was? The minutes of that meeting won't be available for another couple of weeks.

This was in JP's Nov Briefing Tolls Update You will recall the last briefing contained a link to the report for the Navigation Committee regarding navigation charges for next year. The Committee has recommended a 3% increase which, if adopted, would provide extra income for new equipment to assist in the management of trees and bankside vegetation and the purchase of safety signs warning boaters about their speed. This recommendation will be considered by the Broads Authority next week. But I'm sure you will have had that? Text

Yes, but in JP's report to the NavCom there were several suggestions on how each increment could be spent. I'm curious how the percentage increase was arrived at, in terms of where the money will be spent. There were very clear options given. I think a 1.5% increase was required, just to stand still. I would like to think that the additional income will be put towards some of those options, and not frittered away in 'overheads'.

I think it went something like this “Why only 3%? We could have got much more, the idiots will pay it anyway. Oh well, we’ll get more next year.” Dave

Good morning Paladine, Yes the figure required for 2018/19 to maintain the current level of service was 1%. The Navigation Committee recommended an increase of 3% across the board. The two recommendations accepted by the Broads Authority on Friday are: (a) The Authority follows the advice of the Navigation Committee and raises charges in the Navigation Area and Adjacent Waters for 2018-19 by 3% across the board, in line with the current rate of inflation (CPI), as set out for the main categories in Table 8, using the additional funding to purchase the new equipment for bankside tree and scrub management and additional safety signs. (b) Following the successful two year trial, the Authority stops printing adhesive toll plaques permanently, other than for short visit tolls. Here is a link to a copy of the full report. http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/1045807/Proposed-Navigation-Charges-for-2018-19-in-the-Navigation-Area-and-Adjacent-Waters-ba241117.pdf On page 11 of the report you will see an indication of the charges for next year with a 3% increase. So, for example, the charge for a Private Motor Boat will be c. £13.24 per square metre and therefore a 22 square metre private motor boat will be paying in the order of £291.78 next year – an increase of £8.58. Hope that helps. With regards John

There is only 1 fact to remember, I have had boats on the Broads for the last 12 years and the Tolls increase has been above inflation for everyone of those years. In that time we have seen areas of the Broads become un navigable due to lack of dredging and free 24 hour moorings in places where people actually want to moor, reduced drastically. I’m rapidly coming to the end of my tether as are many more. Dave

Hi Dave - just remind me which areas of the rivers have become unnavigable in that period?
