Think thats a bit harsh, Bobdog - there have been occasions to my knowledge that even BA staff have been responsible for marshland fires.

Neither is that, as far as I am aware, entirely true according to my info but I may be wrong!!!!

Broadsword did a fantastic job of clearing the scrub from Ranworth Dam. A massive job and all praise should go to them.  The supervision of Broadsword goes back way before this project and you are correct there was a fire at Ranworth, This was unusual as normally during winter the biggest difficulty is with the water level being to high! No damage was done and the results were that a job that needed doing got done with very little cost to the Authority.  Regulations on procedure are ever more complex and while in some ways these are useful and necessary, they are now hindering the possibility of maintaining marshland sit should be. The natural progression of mash to woodland can be seen in many places now and the resulting scrub is very problematic.

Without the Broadsword volunteers there would be much less achieved and I am very grateful for the work they do. I have been involved in bank clearance in the past and it isn't easy. Unfortunately, the ravages of time and several operations mean that I can no longer participate, but I respect those who do.

kurli, if you're still working near Crome's Dyke, is there any chance you could nip a few branches off the trees on the north bank of the dyke. The EA dredged it a couple of years back, but the overhanging vegetation makes navigation towards Johnny Crowe's staithe impossible for anything but a canoe - it is part of the navigation, after all. Or perhaps it could be suggested for attention next winter?  Smile

Presumably a volunteer with direct connections to the man upstairs would be especially useful?
