‘Evening, folks. Does anyone know the colours, and / or description, and / or have photographs of the following boatyard pennants from the 1970s, please:- Leisuretime Boats, Brundall; Treasure Craft, Brundall and Silver Star Cruisers, Oulton Broad. Grateful thanks in advance for any information. Steve.

Silver Star Cruisers, always thought that that was the name of a boat that was hired out by Top-Craft.

Silver Star is shown here as being from TopCraft: http://www.broads.org.uk/wiki2018/index.php?title=Boat_Details&BoatId=9624&BoatHistory=15335

Thank you for replies . I am thinking that maybe topcraft had one of their boats with Helmsman and so folk would think it was another yard , they gave the boat name as the yard name . I need to research further . There is a pennant design for this yard . I have many old Blake's and hoseasons brochures and am looking for helmsman ( if there is such a thing) If anyone is interested , so far I have found 238 boatyards dating from 1947 to 2000. Many thanks Maggie xx

I worked at Fowlers Boatsyard on Oulton Broad at that time and knew Jimmy Topliss well enough to call him a friend. I also knew all the yards around the Broad at that time and whilst I am suitably doddery in my declining years I do remember the boat but I don't remember the yard as anything other than Topcraft. That said, Jimmy might have used the Silver Star name in the first year or so of hiring before he had a yard, mid to late 1960s. Like one or two others he hired a boat out from Oulton Broad Yacht Station using Bradbeers as his agent.

Yes , I have the Bradbeers pennant , red whale . But any idea who Helmsman were , their logo was a ship wheel . They traded in the 1970's as far as I know . I keep coming to a dead end but they did advertise 20 + yards on their books . Many thanks Maggie xx

Well forum came up trumps . Helmsman started up when bradbeers closed . The yards that didnt transfer to Blake's and hoseasons joined Helmsman . But helmsman only lasted 2 or 3 yrs . They had about 20 very small yards on their books , some with only one or two boats . Now I just have to find the pennant colours . Stay safe Maggie xx Steve & Maggie Not quite an ancient mariner ...... though some say he was at sea before Pontius was a pilate !

Helmsman was very short-lived, pretty sure that it was based in Lowestoft but don't take that as gospel.
